Frequently asked questions
Q.What documents do you need to open a business account in Morocco?
For an auto-entrepreneur, a national ID and the National Auto-Entrepreneur Register certificate are usually enough. Liberal professions add their professional order registration and tax ID. For a company (SARL), the bank requires the negative certificate, articles of association, trade register, tax ID, ICE number and the managers' IDs. Some banks also ask for proof of business address. Preparing a complete file before your appointment speeds up the opening, which in practice takes 48 hours to two weeks.
Q.Is a business account mandatory for auto-entrepreneurs?
The auto-entrepreneur status does not formally require a paid "professional" account: a dedicated account for the activity is enough in most cases. However, separating your flows is essential in practice: quarterly turnover declarations, evidence in case of a tax audit, card or CMI payments in the business's name. Many banks offer discounted auto-entrepreneur packages, sometimes free in their digital version. Mixing personal and business accounts complicates your proof of income, especially if you apply for a loan later.
Q.Which hidden fees should you watch out for on a business account?
Beyond the advertised account fees, watch for: the movement commission (a percentage charged on account debits, sometimes 0.5 to 2 per mille), transfer fees outside your package, the business card subscription, cheque deposit fees, commissions on large cash deposits, and closing fees. On the card terminal, compare both the per-transaction commission AND the monthly terminal rent. Always ask for the official fee schedule: Moroccan banks must publish their conditions, and half of the cost differences hide in these secondary lines.
Q.Online bank or branch: which should a professional choose?
Digital offers like L'bankalik (Attijariwafa bank) or CIH Bank's online packages have very low or zero account fees, fast opening and a full mobile app. They suit freelancers and e-merchants whose operations are paperless. A branch remains preferable if you handle a lot of cash or cheques, if you want a negotiated overdraft or investment loan, or if you want an account manager who knows your file. Many professionals combine both: a digital account for daily operations, a branch relationship for financing.
Q.How do you accept card payments: terminal and CMI?
To take payments in-store, ask your bank for a card terminal: you sign an acquiring contract, pay a monthly terminal rent and a commission on each transaction (generally between 0.8 and 2% depending on your volume and sector). To sell online, CMI (Centre Monétique Interbancaire) affiliation goes through your bank: it lets you accept Moroccan and international cards on your website, with a per-transaction commission. Also compare the payment-link and QR-code solutions that several banks and payment institutions now offer small merchants.
Q.Can you easily switch banks for your business account?
Yes, nothing ties you to your bank for life. Account closure is regulated by Bank Al-Maghrib and must be free in most cases. The real constraint is operational: informing your clients of the new bank details, updating direct debits (CNSS, taxes, suppliers), migrating the terminal or CMI contract. The prudent method: open the new account, migrate flows gradually over one to two months, then close the old one. If you have an ongoing loan attached to the account, negotiate first — that is often when your bank lowers its fees.
