MRE Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a mortgage in Morocco as an MRE in 2026?
▼
Yes. All major Moroccan banks (Attijariwafa Bank with Bladi MRE, Banque Populaire with Bladi Invest, BMCE BOA, CIH Bank, Crédit Agricole du Maroc) offer MRE mortgages. 2026 conditions: 20-30 % down payment, up to 25 years, 4.50-5.75 % APR. Documentation: last 3 foreign pay slips, employment contract, last tax return from the country of residence.
How do I open a convertible dirham account in Morocco?
▼
Visit a Moroccan bank branch during a return to Morocco with passport, consular card (obtained free at the Moroccan consulate in your city of residence), proof of residence in the country of residence, and an initial deposit in foreign currency (euros, dollars). The account is funded only in foreign currency and allows free outgoing transfers.
Am I taxed in France/Belgium/Spain or in Morocco on my retirement pension?
▼
In Morocco, under bilateral tax treaties (article 18, OECD model). You additionally benefit from the 80 % allowance in article 76 of the Moroccan CGI on foreign pensions transferred in non-convertible dirhams. Example: a pension of MAD 30,000/month taxable on only MAD 6,000, i.e., less than 2 % effective tax burden.
What is the cheapest way to transfer money to Morocco?
▼
Wise (formerly TransferWise) is generally the cheapest for amounts > EUR 300: fees EUR 4-7 for EUR 1,000, interbank rate (most advantageous), delivery 1-2 business days. For beneficiaries without bank accounts or fast in-branch delivery, Wafacash and Cash Plus remain competitive (EUR 8-15 fees).
Can I invest in the Moroccan stock market from abroad as an MRE?
▼
Yes, without restriction. The MRE even benefits from an advantage: capital gains on shares of the Casablanca Stock Exchange are exempt from income tax if held > 1 year. Securities account opening possible at Attijari Intermédiation, CFG Bank, BMCE Capital, CDG Capital. Initial deposit in convertible currency.
How do I receive two pensions (host country + Morocco) at retirement?
▼
Social security agreements (France-Morocco 1965, Belgium-Morocco 1968, Spain-Morocco 1979, Germany-Morocco 1981) allow totalization of contribution periods. Each country pays a pension prorated to its contribution years. Apply in the country of residence at retirement, with career records from both regimes.
