Tanger Med: from port bet to 9 million containers
Tanger Med is a port complex located 40 km northeast of Tangier, on the Strait of Gibraltar. Launched in 2003 by royal speech of HM Mohammed VI in a bet vision to position Morocco as a global logistics platform, the port began operations in 2007. Twenty years later, Tanger Med has exceeded all optimistic forecasts: 9 million containers handled in 2025 (absolute record, +14% vs 2024).
Phase 4: 28 billion MAD to reach 15 million containers
The Phase 4 extension announced in May 2026 is the most ambitious port investment project ever launched in Africa. With 28 billion MAD (~2.7 billion USD) invested over 4 years (2026-2030), it aims to bring the complex's total capacity to 15 million annual containers by 2030.
Competitive position: ahead of Algeciras, Valencia, Port Said
Phase 4 will sustainably consolidate Tanger Med's Mediterranean leadership position. With 15M, Tanger Med will join the world's top 10 container ports.
