1. Legal obligation and requirements in 2026
Motorcycle insurance has been mandatory in Morocco for 30 years.
Insurance Code (law 17-99): minimum required cover
Every registered two-wheeled motor vehicle must carry at least civil liability insurance. Without it, you are not allowed to ride on the road.
Penalties for riding uninsured
An immediate fine of MAD 1,000-3,000, licence withdrawal for 12-24 months and seizure of the vehicle. If you cause an accident, your personal liability is unlimited.
Documents to show at a roadside check
Your driving licence, the vehicle registration card, a valid insurance certificate and the technical inspection certificate.
2. Third-party vs comprehensive (all risks)
There are two main levels of cover.
Third-party insurance (legal minimum)
Covers civil liability only and costs MAD 800-2,500/year. Suited to older motorcycles and tight budgets.
Third-party plus
Adds theft and fire to civil liability. Costs MAD 1,500-3,500/year.
Comprehensive (all risks) insurance
Covers civil liability, damage to your own motorcycle, theft, fire, vandalism and riding gear. Costs MAD 2,500-6,000/year.
3. 2026 rates by engine size
The market splits into three segments.
Scooters and small engines (< 125cc)
About 65% of the market. Third-party: MAD 800-1,200/year. Comprehensive: MAD 1,800-2,500/year.
49cc / under-50 cm³ mopeds: a separate regime
A "49cc" is a moped under Law 52-05 (engine ≤ 50 cm³, design speed ≤ 50 km/h). Since Law 116-14 it can be ridden with an AM licence from age 14, and it has an ownership title and serial number instead of a registration card (article 65 of the Highway Code). RC cover is still mandatory, as for any motorcycle (Law 17-99). No insurer publishes a 49cc rate online: AXA Assurance Maroc and Sanlam Maroc refer you to a quote (checked on 27 August 2026). Details, documents and FAQ are in our dedicated guide: 50-125cc motorcycle and scooter insurance, section 9.
Medium motorcycles (125-500cc)
About 25% of the market. Third-party: MAD 1,500-2,800/year. Comprehensive: MAD 2,500-4,000/year.
Large engines (> 500cc)
About 10% of the market. Third-party: MAD 3,000-4,500/year. Comprehensive: MAD 4,500-7,000/year.
What affects your individual rate
Your age, accident history, type of use, city, where you park and how long you have held your licence.

5. Claims, bonus/malus and cancellation
Three rules worth knowing.
Bonus/malus system
Each year without an accident earns a 5-10% bonus, and each accident adds a 25-50% malus. You keep your coefficient when you switch insurers.
Reporting a claim
You must report a claim within 5 business days (2 days for theft). Fill in a joint accident report with the other party, take photos and note witnesses' contact details.
Cancelling your contract
Under Law 110-14, once your contract is 1 year old you can cancel it at any time with 60 days' notice.
