Protection for the self-employed and TNS in Morocco: secure your income

A self-employed person who falls ill or is injured stops earning a living overnight, without the employee's safety net. Morocco has extended its compulsory health insurance (AMO) to self-employed workers (TNS) — shopkeepers, craftsmen, liberal professions, auto-entrepreneurs — but this basic health cover does not replace income lost during a stoppage, nor protect the family in case of disability or death. TNS protection fills this gap: daily allowances, disability annuity, death benefit. Wafir compares Moroccan insurers' protection contracts so your business — and your family — hold up even when you can no longer work.

Why go through wafir.ma?

Daily allowances

In case of work stoppage for illness or accident, you receive a daily allowance that offsets the lost income, after a waiting period and within the agreed duration.

Disability annuity

If an accident or illness leaves you with permanent disability, an annuity or capital takes over to maintain your standard of living long term.

Death benefit for the family

In case of death, your loved ones receive a capital sum to cope, repay outstanding loans and preserve the children's future.

Top-up to the self-employed AMO

The self-employed AMO reimburses care but not lost income. Protection complements this compulsory cover where it stops, without replacing it.

Designed for the self-employed

Shopkeeper, craftsman, doctor, consultant or auto-entrepreneur: guarantees adapt to your declared income and the nature of your activity.

Adjustable guarantees

Choose the level of daily allowance, the waiting period, the death benefit and options (serious illness, hospitalisation) according to your budget and needs.

Contribution benchmarks for TNS protection

Daily allowances only
≈ 1 – 3% of the guaranteed income/year
Full formula (allowances + disability + death)
≈ 2,000 – 8,000 MAD/year by profile
Death benefit (by guaranteed amount)
Contribution by age and chosen capital
Tax advantage (under conditions)
Possible deductibility of some contributions

Indicative 2025-2026 benchmarks. The contribution depends on age, health, income to guarantee, chosen waiting period and guarantees (allowances, disability, death). Some protection contracts grant tax advantages under the regulations in force.

Frequently asked questions

Q.Is the self-employed AMO enough to protect a freelancer?

No, and this is a common misunderstanding. The self-employed AMO, now generalised in Morocco, is compulsory health insurance: it reimburses part of the cost of care, medicines and hospitalisation. But it does not pay allowances to offset income lost during a work stoppage, unlike what employees get through the CNSS. For a self-employed person, not working means earning nothing while costs continue. AMO also does not cover permanent disability or death in a standard-of-living logic. TNS protection precisely fills these blind spots; it stacks with AMO without replacing it.

Q.How do daily allowances work for a self-employed person?

The daily allowance (IJ) is an amount paid for each day of work stoppage following a covered illness or accident. You choose the daily amount at subscription, consistent with your income: it pays your fixed costs (professional rent, loan instalments, family expenses) while your business is stopped. Two parameters are key: the waiting period (number of stoppage days not compensated at the start, e.g. 3, 7 or 15 days) and the maximum indemnity duration (often up to 365 days). The shorter the waiting period and the higher the IJ, the higher the contribution. Calibrating these two sliders well gives real protection without overpaying.

Q.What does the death benefit bring to my family?

The death benefit pays a capital sum, or sometimes an annuity, to the beneficiaries you name (spouse, children) in case of death, and often also in case of total permanent disability. For a self-employed person, it is an essential net: if you pass away, your family suddenly loses the income source, while loans (mortgage, business) and current expenses remain. The capital lets them repay these debts, maintain their standard of living and fund the children's education. You freely set the amount and name the beneficiaries. Remember to update the beneficiary clause after a family change (marriage, birth), so the capital reaches the intended people.

Q.Do you need a medical exam to subscribe?

It depends on the level of guarantees and your age. For modest amounts of allowances or capital, a simple declarative health questionnaire often suffices. Above certain thresholds, or if the questionnaire reveals a history, the insurer may request a medical exam, tests or an additional check-up. Answering accurately is crucial: an intentional misstatement about your health can void the contract and lead to refusal of any compensation, even years later. Depending on your profile, the insurer may accept the risk at the normal rate, apply a surcharge, exclude certain pre-existing conditions or, more rarely, decline. Subscribing young and in good health secures the best terms.

Q.Does TNS protection offer a tax advantage?

Some protection and retirement-savings contracts grant, under conditions, tax advantages in Morocco: part of the contributions may be deductible from taxable income, within the limits and according to the terms set by the general tax code, particularly for contracts meeting a minimum duration and exit conditions. The rules differ between pure protection (allowances, disability, death) and retirement-savings contracts. For a heavily-taxed self-employed person, this advantage can significantly reduce the net cost of protection. It is advisable to check the precise eligibility of the contemplated contract and, for high incomes, to consult an accountant to optimise both protection and taxation.

Q.What amount of allowance and capital should you plan for?

The right method starts from your expenses, not arbitrary figures. For the daily allowance, add up your incompressible fixed costs (professional and personal rent, loan instalments, essential family expenses) and divide by 30: that is the minimum your IJ should cover for each stoppage day. For the death benefit, a common approach is to cover the balance of your current loans plus several years of income to give your family time to reorganise. For disability, aim to maintain a significant share of your income long term. A well-sized cover beats symbolic protection: this is exactly what Wafir helps you calibrate by comparing offers.
