Boat insurance in Morocco: pleasure, fishing and water sports
With nearly 3,500 km of Atlantic and Mediterranean coastline, Morocco is seeing boating and marinas grow in Tangier, Agadir, Mohammedia, Bouregreg and Saidia, while fishing sustains thousands of vessels. A boat is a substantial asset, exposed to storms, collision and theft at moorings. Wafir compares Moroccan insurers' boat policies: at-sea liability, hull damage, theft, assistance and towing, for both pleasure and fishing craft.

Why go through wafir.ma?
At-sea liability
Collision, damage to another vessel or a third party, accidental pollution: pleasure liability covers the damage your boat causes — an indispensable base guarantee.
Hull damage
Storm, grounding, fire, flooding: hull cover compensates damage to your boat, its hull, engine and equipment.
At-sea assistance and towing
Engine failure offshore, towing to port, search and rescue: marine assistance avoids huge costs in case of breakdown far from shore.
Theft and vandalism at moorings
Theft of the boat, the outboard engine or equipment, vandalism at the port or ashore: protect your investment even when the craft is laid up.
Crew and passenger protection
Personal-injury cover for the skipper, crew and guests on board: medical costs and compensation in case of an accident while sailing.
Tailored to professional fishing
Artisanal fishing boats, trawlers, fishing gear: specific guarantees cover the activity, equipment and business interruption for fishermen.

Who is it for?
- Boaters moored in the marinas of Tangier or Saidia
- Owners of motorboats and sailboats in Agadir and Mohammedia
- Jet-ski and water-sports enthusiasts along the coast
- Fishermen and artisanal fishing cooperatives
- Boat-rental operators and nautical charter bases
- Nautical clubs and sailing schools
Annual premium benchmarks for boat insurance
- Jet-ski / small craft — liability + theft
- ≈ 1,500 – 4,000 MAD/year
- Pleasure motorboat — liability + hull
- ≈ 1 – 2% of the insured value/year
- Cruising sailboat — comprehensive sailing
- ≈ 1.5 – 2.5% of the insured value/year
- Artisanal fishing boat + gear
- Specific rate by activity
Indicative 2025-2026 benchmarks. A pleasure boat's premium is often a percentage of the insured value (1 to 2.5% per year), adjusted by age, power, navigation zone and guarantees. Professional fishing falls under bespoke contracts.

Frequently asked questions
Q.Is boat insurance mandatory in Morocco?
Unlike cars, there is no general insurance requirement for private pleasure boating in Morocco. However, liability cover is strongly recommended and often required in practice: marinas make mooring conditional on a liability certificate, and renting a boat requires it. For professional fishing and passenger transport, maritime regulations require specific guarantees. Without insurance, a collision or accidental pollution can expose your personal assets to considerable amounts. Pleasure liability therefore remains the prudent minimum as soon as you take to the sea.
Q.What's the difference between liability and hull cover?
Liability (RC) covers the damage your boat causes to others: collision with another vessel, injury to a swimmer, pollution. It never repairs your own craft. Hull cover (damage to the vessel) covers the damage your boat sustains: storm, grounding, fire, flooding, sometimes theft. It is the equivalent of comprehensive in motor insurance. For a small old boat, liability alone may suffice; for a valuable sailboat or motorboat, hull cover protects a significant asset. Many insurers offer formulas combining liability, hull, assistance and crew cover.
Q.Is my boat covered while moored or in dry storage?
Yes, provided the contract allows it. Good policies distinguish the sailing period from the winterising or laid-up period. At a marina mooring, at the quay or in dry storage, the main risks are theft (of the boat, outboard engine, equipment), vandalism, fire and weather-related damage. Some contracts impose guarding or out-of-water conditions during winter. Check the authorised navigation zone and storage conditions: a boat stolen on a trailer outside your home is not always covered the same way as at the port.
Q.How much does pleasure-boat insurance cost in Morocco?
For pleasure craft, the premium is most often expressed as a percentage of the boat's insured value: count roughly 1 to 2.5% per year for a liability + hull formula, i.e. around 2,000 to 5,000 MAD for a boat worth 200,000 MAD. A jet-ski or small craft with liability and theft starts around 1,500 to 4,000 MAD. The rate depends on value, age and power, the declared navigation zone (coastal or offshore), the skipper's experience and the chosen guarantees. For professional fishing, contracts are tailored to the activity and onboard equipment.
Q.Do you need a boat licence to get insured?
In Morocco, operating certain motorboats requires a pleasure navigation licence whose level depends on power and zone (coastal or offshore). The insurer checks that the skipper holds the appropriate title: sailing without the required licence can lead to a refusal of compensation, as the insurer considers you were not authorised to operate. For small low-power craft and sailing, a licence is not always mandatory. Declare the engine power and craft type precisely: this determines both the licence requirement and the premium calculation.
Q.Is at-sea assistance included in case of breakdown?
Not automatically: marine assistance is a separate guarantee, distinct from liability and hull cover. It handles towing your boat to the nearest port in case of engine failure or breakdown, sometimes search and rescue, and crew repatriation. Without this guarantee, an offshore tow can be very expensive, as it requires heavy resources. Check the intervention radius (coastal or offshore), the cover ceilings and how to call for help. For anyone sailing far from shore, assistance is often as important as hull cover.
